The 'XL" in Fractal Design Define XL Case stands for extra large and that's no lie. With lots of room to work, plenty of drive bays, excellent cooling, cable management system, great styling and so much more, this is one of the better cases on the market. Fact is, it has just about everything you should be looking for in a full tower case.
Hi 3dGameMan. Thanks for uploading all these good video review.
I got some question for this Define XL case.
1. I am wondering if that case is going to fit the Corsair H80 CPU water cooling. becasue that CPU cooler will required the fan at the back of the case to be remove.
2. I saw that the power supply at the bottom had something coverd it and this will 'cause' the air flow from the power supply would not come up to the case but the problem is where can these airflow goes? is it going to case overheat? I am going to put a power supply in this case and the fan of the power supply will be on the top of the power supply. so i am thinking about the air flow problem for the power supply in this case. This is the power supply I am be using (Seasonic X-Series 760W)
Sorry for my bad english but hope you will be able to understant it.
This is a pretty decent case, it has nearly everything I am looking for. Easily accessible filters that do not slide out from between two panels, leaving the dust they trapped behind. Removable hard drive cage, for ridiculously long graphics cards. Plenty of cable management holes, it should have one more on the top right side of the motherboard for the CPU Power cable. Large cutout for the CPU back plate, looks like it might even line up.
I would prefer it if they made the front door open the correct way or made it so it was reversible and put a proper reset button in there. Perhaps the addition of some tooless ODD drive system and maybe some of those Lian Li toolest expansion slot retention clips. I'm not terribly concerned one way or the other about the separation between the motherboard and power supply chambers. In case anyone is interested, the plastic panel that opens up above the Power Supply is there so you can mount the Power Supply upside down and have it draw air from the other chamber.
If they made this in a mid tower design at a reasonable price I would probably buy it.
I appreciate the detailed product reviews. I especially like when you show how things work like actually removing the panels, taking out and showing us the fan filters, removing and or repositioning the hard drive cages. Rather than simply pointing the camera at them and mentioning them in passing. One thing you might consider adding to your arsenal of tools is a small flashlight to illuminate darkened areas such as the 5 1/4 to 3 1/2 inch drive bay converter that we were unable to see in this video.
Thanks for the good product reviews.
Thanks a lot for a great review; detailed, precise and well-toned - just my cup of tea, Rodney!
What is the difference between this case and the Antec P190. Which case is better. Thankyou
3dGameMan which one is best this or 800D?
It's a great looking case. I might buy the case just to experiment with it. I'm thinking about putting a heavy duty gaming rig in this bad boy. Iwant to see what kind of temps that I'll get with an overclocked Core i7 950 and a pair of overclocked MSI GTX 580 Lightnings. If the temps are acceptable, then I will probably keep the case. Thanks Rodney, you have great reviews and I like your style in which you present and review the products. Twofeathers
Not bad but I'll stick with my 932 and spend the money on the sound dampening material. lol
No really now, if I was going for a more low key look and the door wasn't an issue(my system sits to the right of me off the floor) then I would consider this because the drive cages are smartly designed. One of the few cabinets that I like the interior of.
Also I would like to point out Rodney that kids will touch anything and everything. You know this. If they see you do it once, they'll be at it when your back is turned. Especially the Tots, being that it's got a magnetic latching door. It doesn't take much pressure to open it.
I keep my Netbook atop the I/O panel to keep anything from inadvertently switching off my system at the worst possible times. However I think I'll be modding it to have front switches. You cat people(generally speaking) know what I'm talking about in this regard. lol
If the reset button is such an issue, why isn't the power button located inside the door too? The power button is just as dangerous being exposed to rugrats.
Hey Rodney! Your videos are really great, I admire your work. This case looks really clean and nice. What bothers me the most though, is the way that the big top fan is angled.
I'm just wondering if the heat generated from all the PC-parts can be transferred effectively with the top fan being placed such as it is? To me it seems rather ineffective. Would this cause the intake fans to create positive air pressure in the case, and if so; how does this affect the cooling performance in general?
Since the case don't seem to have many ventilation-holes (and such), dust doesn't seem to be a problem with all the dustfilters on the intake fans. So I'm also wondering if this case wouldn't have better cooling performance with a negative air pressure?
I'd gladly exchange any of the fans included, and even open up the ModuVent for the possability of adding an extra fan. As long as the PC keeps the gear cool, then I'm cool. :)
Thanks in advance!
PS. Your reviews really helps alot! :)
With two 140mm fans in the front and 140mm + 180mm fans in the back, you'll be fine. A 140mm fan pushes 60% of the air that a 180mm fan moves. Even if the 180mm (15393 mm^2) isn't performing at it's best, it's still outdoing a 140mm (25446 mm^2) fan.
I was realy waiting for this review, thanks.
I was deciding between NZXT Whisper and XL.
But still i am not sure.
Definitely an awesome business or office case but as a geeky little gamer I prefer the OMG what IS that!? cases.
The case was hard to see in certain parts of the review, you could try getting some kind of soft light that you could angle at the case to light it up a little. It would be much appreciated :)
A friend of mine has the Silverstone Raven RV01 case. People always comment on it at lan parties about how different it looks.
i prefer windows or grill on my cases. This is a really well made case. I have to ask Rodney, why do you prefer an aluminum case over steel if its a full tower? I can understand if it were something you planned on carrying around. This is meant for stationary use right? Maybe its just me. Im thinking that if someone tries to steal my monster sized pc, they may throw out their back and just leave it where they found it!
Thanks for the review. Glad to see that your mixing your unboxings with reviews now. Thank you.
Aluminum is much lighter than steel, especially in a full tower case format. Even though a computer case is stationary most of the time, if you wanted to occasionally attend a LAN party or even upgrades would make it almost to heavy to move.
Aluminum is also cooler, but the disadvantage are, it's not as strong and more expensive than steel.
It has some great features, but it just looks too plain for me.
prefer the dust filter being under the case instead of inside like the ATCS 840
awesome with the top covered and top fan inside
love the case, just with the door would open like the antec p183. i just got a phantom, but i am thinking of getting the define xl
I've been waiting forever for Fractal cases to be released in the U.S. Supposedly they're coming soon :D
what is a rhyostat?
A rheostat/potentiometer is a variable resistor. It is used to control the voltage going to a particular device, in this instant, its a case fan. By changing the resistance of the rheostat, the voltage drop across it increases/decreases thus increasing/decreasing the voltage across the fan, which in turn speeds it up or slows it down. ;)
Rodney, I want to fill you in with a thought I have.
I've said it before, a long time ago so you probably don't remember my exact comment, but others have probably commented on this too. What I want to say is that I really miss the YouTube comments. You told me that "Oh, it's so easy. You can just click the comment link and post a comment on my page. You don't even have to register." Well, that's true, but that extra click and extra tab is simply not something I want to do. I want it as simple as I can, thus I like being able to comment on YouTube.
I understand that you probably like getting views on your web page too, but as a subscriber I'd like to say I don't like to do so. I haven't commented on a video like I am now on your web page for ages. The last time I commented was when I complained about this exact same thing. It gotta be many months ago.
If it's the views that does so you make your subscribers or other random people go to this link to comment I got an idea. You can hold many small contests on your web page. You'll still get a decent amount of views, maybe not as many as now, but I would like it much more that way. This way the community on your web page will still grow and your forum will still grow too.
Please, Rodney, bring back the YouTube comments. I love being able to communicate with other viewers through YouTube. It's simpler and MUCH easier to keep track of since 99% of us are much more on YouTube then on here. Another thing is that I went through your videos and it seems as if you got a lot more views on YouTube when the comments were enabled then what you're getting now.
Again, please, Rodney, bring the comments back... I took a decent amount of time to make this comment so I'd appreciate a reply. I'll stick around here until then. :)

Rodney doesn't have the time to moderate all of his YouTube videos. And time and time again we have had to deal with a few very bad apples. Over here on 3GM we can actually moderate and provide a much better atmosphere for all people.
Never-the-less, does it stink to disable comments on YouTube, YES. Will Rodney re-enable comments on YT Videos right now, NO! Although, if someday in the future YouTube should implement a better solution for moderating, then maybe Rodney will change his mind. So unless YoubTube changes the way comments are moderated it will remain disabled. No amount of pleading will ever change that fact and I hope people will just stop asking us because it's getting old. If you want the comments on YoutTube that badly then ask YouTube to do something about improving the moderation control.
I hope that sums it all up for you and everyone else. Future comments on this repeat dead-horse subject will be deleted as normal.
How could I know that this question has been asked a lot when I'm never on here? And is it that hard to keep track of "bad apples"? There's a block button next to the comments under the reply button if you're the one posting the videos. It's not like you have to block all the bad repliers on every single video. If you block some here and some there then eventually the "bad apples" will dissapeare since it's the same people making hate comments over and over again. I don't see the problem.
One nice thing YouTube can do is to let people of the video poster's choice to be able to block people from the channel too. Although, I think it could get out of hand pretty easily since many mods love to ban people the first chance they get. Not saying it's like that here, but on many forums it is.
Please explain why it would be so difficult to do what I said in the first paragraph. I'm going to bed now. I will check on this tomorrow. Good night. :)
How can I know you are not all the same people because there are too many Anonymous users...lol Yes, can track by IP's here but you and I know IP's can change with a Proxy.
Please Register, it's a simple process and helps me understand who I am talking with.
It's not as simple as you might think to moderate YouTube on such a large scale of videos. That's the problem, pure and simple. Yes, banning people gets old, it's like all or nothing. Then they come here and complain to Rodney on why they got banned on YouTube.
I like giving Rodney that shiny Penny for being a hit on his website and clicking on all his ads.
If you press my Reset button, Rodney's going to have to put you down! Very rare you see a Business like case that doesn't have the word DELL Spewed all over it, also good for musician or anyone that likes to record around their case and don't need fan noise to pick up. I like it, going to recommend it to a cousin who's a musician.
"it will end up with somebody being sent to the bed room". haha... seems like its happened to you before xD
Oh No! Sending someone to the bed is probably the last thing on the list after hitting the reset button while working. LOL!
It's ready for watching! :)
YouTube is still processing this video, but they should be finished soon.
