If it was a new installation I might think the power supply wasnt sufficient but before anything I would check the fan for dust and overheating. Its never a good idea to assume its something that needs to be replaced right off the bat. +1 for msi afterburner.
I had a problem when I bought my HD7970, the moment I started a game it would turn of the entire system, the solution whas to change the power source, I had a Thermaltake 550watts 6 year old power source and change it to Corsair HX1050 and the problem was solved, I can even overclock with no problem whatsoever.
Yep, PSU is somethings the culprit.

One program I like to use in order to monitor temps, fan speeds and GPU usage while gaming is MSI Afterburner. It has a handy OSD (On-screen Display). It also adjusts fan speeds depending on temperatures you set.
I have it set to 40% when doing less GPU intensive things, but when playing games and the GPU reaches 50C it automatically bumps up the fan speed to 70%, if it hits 60C it will bump up to 100%.
Overheating, the bane of a PC's existence, that and dust....
When I first got my PC it had its original stock cooler and ran at about 45-55C, this was in late winter as well, thankfully the fan started to fail on me.
Why thankfully? Well in figuring out what to do I found out the stock cooler put on the CPU did not actually support the CPU I'm using. So I spent $30 and got the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus on sale from NewEgg, it kept my temps down at 18-24C, but now it's summer and I live in California and boy has it been HOT, the temps now stay around 28-33C. I don't even want to know how the crap cooler would be doing right now....
