Still no caps in the Netherlands (Europe) that I know off.
I really hope you will lose that cap one day.

Since a few months I have FTTH (Fiber to the home) 90mbit/s up & down, cost about 70€ a month.

Here in rural colorado its terrible service/prices I'm paying $40 a month for 1.5Mb/s and this is their "extreme package." It takes a day and a half to download steam games and usually their towers cant handle more than a day of use before they crash and restart themselves. Luckily there's no bandwith cap but if there were I'm sure I wouldn't have enough time to reach it lol. Hopefully qwest or comcast makes service available here because I'm tired of barely being able to play online games without lag.

This morning my ISP (Alice - Germany) called my girlfriend saying they need to talk with her about a little problem. She told them to call later, cause she was at the university at that time. Since i've downloaded few games from host sites as fileserve lately, i'm little worried. Hope this isn't the case.
A lot of people told me to not download music and movies and i'll be fine and most important NOT to upload even a kb, cause this is the major problem, i hope they are right.

I've had a cap since the beginning. Its just how it is in Australia. but ours is a plan. So if u go over the limit you just get shaped in speed. massivly. i go down to dial up speed if i ever get shaped.

Anonymous

I have 1.5 down and I think .5 up, they don't say what the up speed is on their site, for $40usd plus like $10 for phone. The service is horrible at times too, but I guess it's good enough without a bw cap.Shoutmix or Shoutbox

Like say by the number 32, the prices Videotron have are worse then Rogers and Bell put together.
They want to push cloud computing, but how are we suppose to pay for that, with all the money we would have put on computer for the next 50 years?
With 1 year of internet from videotron, I can buy 2 average gaming computer, so do I have to chose between a good computer and a good internet?

The tools in Canada who voted for the Conservatives will rue the day when our privacy laws are sold to multi-million-making software companies who'll go after specific users downloading software, music, and games through torrents. Newsgroups are next. Thank you, Canada.

Here in Sweden, we had that at the dawn of the internet, back at the 28.8 and 56k modem times. Maybe even when they started supplying ADSL, I don't remember. But since then, for a good 10+ years, I haven't heard anything about caps. Not a peep. I don't see any ISP here regressing back to capping their services, as this would mean a massive customer exodus to other providers, leaving the company in question in financial ruin. Having 10+ national and hundreds of local providers across the country, rather than being stuck with only three, it helps a good bit, i guess. The free market is beautiful, when it works.

way to expensive but what options do i have?

Anonymous

Im with Rogers atm and my package is :

Up to
90 Mbps download speed
†Up to 2 Mbps upload speed
††175 GB monthly usage allowance

while the service has been consistently fast (speedtest always puts me in the mid 80s) the real reason ive got this package isnt the speed but the GB cap. the lower plans i was always going over so i decided why not pay 100$ a month and get the speed instead of getting 25gb and still paying 100$ a month due to over limit fees

totally unreasonable prices, same with there TV services. on a side note atm Bell doesnt have GB caps here in NB but of course im not in fiberOP range even though i live in a residential area.

Great video showcasing the differences between ILEC's and wholesalers. Bell is out to make the maximum amount of profit with little to no care to it's customers. They are charging what the market will bear but we know that they passed that bar a long time ago and the consumer has started to push back ala stopthemeter campaign.

Just one thing about your video; Fibe is NOT Fiber. It's FTTN or Fiber To The Node. Bell puts a cabinet or remote less then 2000m from a group of houses/businesses (typically subdivisions) with Fiber running into the cabinet. Bell still uses twisted pair or coax to your house. Bell has just decreased the last mile copper distance to your house for DSL so you can get higher peak speeds.
Excerpt from Wikipedia.org:
fiber to the node often uses the existing coaxial or twisted pair infrastructure to provide last mile service. For this reason, fiber to the node is less costly to deploy. In the long-term, however, its bandwidth potential is limited relative to implementations which bring the fiber still closer to the subscriber

Unfortunately Bell has not been required to give wholesale access to ISPs, so don't look to Teksavvy to offer those speeds everywhere, they must have their own cabinets set up with their own fiber service to it.
In short, there is no fiber running to your house, it's still POTS/Coax.

Good video, make more.

i live in oakville. im with cogeco, usually price wise is very comparable to rogers. in this area i cant get tekksavy, ive already tried, they dont offer cable internet service here yet unfortunately.
i would love to switch to them.
i currently use somewhere between 200-350gb a month. my internet package is the ultimate 30 with cogeco. 30mbps download 2mbps upload. with a 125gb cap. this package cost 59.95. I obviously ALWAYS go over, which cost 1 dollar per 1gb over the 125gb up to a maximum of 50 dollars/50gbs. so when i reach 176gb for the month i dont pay extra. which means my bill is ALWAYS 129.89 thats with taxes in. thats crazy expensive for internet, but i dont have any other options. wish tekksavy would get more customers and expand, otherwise im stuck with this huge bill, thank goodness i dont have tv or a home phone otherwise i would stuck with an even bigger bill...
anyone know other options?

Sad to say this but it's much worse in New Zealand.
It costs me $120 a month for ADSL on a 60GB cap with theoritical maximum of 25mbps up and 1mbps up but this is what I get
Can't really complain though when I've been with more than 5 isp and the biggest in New Zealand, the one I'm with now gives you the best service and line quality.
Would like a bigger cap though...

Anonymous

Also I'm living in on of New Zealand's best serviced city, Auckland and in a suburb with the "latest" ADSL2+ technology. Fibre is available, but only if you're willing to pay $1000 + a month for it, not to mention the connection fees.

We pay about $100 USD for this shit. Rediculous. Only internet we can get too, Metrocast owns the cities lines...

Here in the UK most companies(or all?) throttle and cap the bandwidth, but on the package I have neither, and the "up to 20Mbps" becomes 10-12Mbps download with 0.8Mbps upload, pretty reasonable imo.

Compared to the rest of the world. Canada is in the top 5 for worse telecommunication for a highly developed country. At the same time Canada is the second largest country in terms of landmass in the world.

Bell and Rogers limits how much extra they charge you when you go over the cap. Bell caps the charge at $60 dollars while Rogers caps it at $50.. so essentially you pay 50-60 more and you get virtually unlimited bandwidth. I say virtually because once you hit 300GB.. your account gets flagged for excessive download. They won't charge you more. They might get a little curious as to what you're downloading or slow your speed.

I'm currently using Rogers High Speed Extreme (the original Extreme service.) 10Mbps down / 1Mbps up with 95GB cap. My Overcharge is $1.50/GB. I've gone over the cap by 120GB before and instead of charging me $180 extra, they only charge me $50 more without slowing my speed down.

Hey Rodney,

I'm here in Richmond Hill, Ontario, and I pay $100 a month before tax and modem rental fee's. I get 24/7/365 Tech support with onsite help within 24 hours if situation can't be solved over the phone. This is essentially close to bell Canada's top plan you can get through a DSL line. It is not covered in your video because it is a Small Business package. In my calculation, I push about 140 - 210 GB a month, with youtube, e-mails, some gaming, etc. therefore an unlimited plan is important to me.

Speedtest:

so far, I've burnt out two modem's and changed out 3-4 of them at no additional charge to me. so this is a decent plan.

In conclusion, this plan is not for everyone, it's expensive at about $125 a month (that's after taxes). however the technical support I get is beyond what any of my friend's at roger's get. I'm really considering teksavvy but i haven't seen their performance or reliability in real life. speaking of reliability, my friend's, who are on roger's, mysteriously drop connection when they use certain programs or play games. i'm always the one left online to face the entire other team. when something does go terribly wrong, like in the case of when my modem burnt out on a Friday night, I called in and got a new one shipped to my location 10:30 AM on a Saturday. When i kept losing connection because of a bad phone line, they came in and installed a dedicated line just for my modem, free of charge.

I have Comcast Cable over here in the States. I have a 250 GB bandwidth cap. I pay about $147 per month for my Internet + my landline (unlimited local and long distance). If I ever need unlimited data, I could upgrade to a business-class account.

Anonymous

I hear you Rod,

im at Mississauga, Ontario with Bell's fibe 16 plan

I can download at around 2 mb/s but they dont even give me the advertised 1 MB upload. I can only upload at like 30-50 kb/s which sucks because I like to host game servers and stuff from time to time

also 75 gb per month, i download a few games and its used up lol

But the final thing is my line's quality is amazing and ping to any game server is a bit lower than all my friends. theres hardly any jitter and the ping stays stable

I'm getting good internet service from Verizon Fios. I'm getting 15 mbps down and 5 mbps up with no cap. However, with Verizon Fios service, I have the option to upgrade to 35 mbps down and 35 mbps up if I want.

Haha, Rodney, when I have to stay at my grandparents, there's a 10GB DL limit.
I'm used to "unlimited" at home. It gets annoying.
