had a computer since 4. now 20. during my teens i've had 16h/day usage. up till now i've never drunk any type of alcohol.
im almost always drunk when commenting or emailing so i voted yes.
btw.. youre pretty :)
Although I spend roughly ~5-8 hours at the computer per day (I`m a programmer), I do not consume alcohol whatsoever (or very little, just on occasions and I`m 21). Rodney, I do not think that drinking is linked to computer use, it`s more linked to person`s own consciousness.
It is now the 7th June and the last time I had a Beer was Christmas day. I play on my computer 20 hours a day.
when i saw the tittle of the poll, i was thinking. HELL NO!!! and than i saw the options. i had to giggle a little. :P
I drink, but I don't want to or even think about it when I'm gaming. What a crock of bull.
Is the ammount of cake consumed related to the murder rates? is the weather in alaska related to the ammount of shop lifting in new zealand?
I love these strange theories, in simple... no computer use is in no way related to teenage drinking, the only possible correlation I can think of is that the teens who drink are too poor to afford a decent pc, apart from that notinhg comes to mind.
I don't think drinking is related to PC usage at all. I'm 20 and play my PC a lot but i never like to drink while doing so, no idea why, just don't. Would much rather have a coffee :)
Although, my dad is also an active PC user and he says otherwise. Says it relaxes him when on his PC. But he doesn't play games, rather talk to people, use Facebook etc.
I think it all comes down to what you don on your PC that determines if you have alcohol or coffee or whatever it is you have when you're on your PC :)
hahaha HELL NO!!! The part where u said abt seeing other ppl online doing it is correct, but thats just another form of PEER PRESSURE. And for us gamers.....yeah, we rock!!! XD
i'm 19 and I get drunk maybe once or twice a month and it's been like that for last 5 years so nothing much, and I sit on my computer all the time I can. In my country (Denmark and Sweden) it is much more common to drink in the teens because there are no ridiculous alcohol laws around it.. well there are in sweden but nobody cares about them. Probably everyone I know who use the computer 'more than average' also gets drunk. But so does everybody else, so I don't think there's a connection.
Yeah I'm totally going to spend my time coming to this site now. There were a serious lack of hardware review websites on the internet. Thank you for filling the void. Oh wait, NOT.
Teen drinking is linked to parents not busting their kids asses... I play on computer and have for many many years and I dont drink.... at all.
Linking computer use to drinking is like linking marshmallow consumption to religion. Just makes you think "what the hell?".
Hell no is my vote.
Not to long ago, maybe 5-6 days ago, on the news there was this study on gamers fingers. They say that they found a increase of *I forgot what it was* in teenagers under the age of 17. I might be able to put the link later about it. They said this disease happens because we got weak muscles in our fingers and we stress them out by playing too much games. Can you post a video about that if I find the link and send it to you? I live in the Bay Area in CA in the USA. Anyone else saw that report?
I'm on my laptop nearly 24/7, and I do not drink alcohol whatsoever. I can't stand the taste of the stuff, anything that has alcohol always had a putrid, horrible taste for me.
The only link one could make is between computer / gaming addiction and susceptibility to addiction, which also includes the possibility of getting addicted to alcohol, but then that doesn't happen because of using a computer. It happens because they're susceptible to addiction.
One thing the USA does have right, not being allowed to drink before 21. They should raise that to around 25 when the brain is fully grown.
That's straight BS.
I'm 20 years old(Not so teen anymore I'm afraid), spend at least 2/3 of my day in a computer, I'm an enthusiast and I'm a Computer Engineering graduate and I drank only once or twice in my life at new years eve or something like that.
You know what's a better study? I believe that teens who stay in front of the computer gaming and stuff are most likely NOT to drink because they aren't going to this stupid parties, raves whatever where they get encouraged to do it.
Ah weeed, That's more ecofriendly..! LOL
perhaps the study is more focused on teens using computers generally speaking, messenger, facebook, etc.
People here in this poll or forum is more interested in extreme gaming, or extreme modding, or extreme stuff, totally different type of users, its like comparing regular drivers with racers.... I would say that if there is a study more focused on gamers, geeks, and who knows even hackers, results would be totally upside down.
Everytime I think on a cigarette, that ebay caption comes up inmediately to my brain: "Used in a Non-Smoke environment"
and I have damaged a laptop for having drinks nearby (just lemonade with a lot of sugar)
Oh wow, um.... am I allowed to stop laughing soon?
I've been using, building, and maintaining PCs for the past 14 years (I'm 28 now).
And in no way shape or form has my alcohol consumption had anything to do with my PC use.
I mean sure I have had a beer here or there while watching a movie or sports broadcast online, but whatever.
This whole study they did was doomed from the get-go.
Ahem. Weed. That is all.
I am almost 18 and I literally sit on comp all day when I am not driving bike or something else.
When I go out with my m8 I am usually puss* coz I dont like alchocol, I can drink it a bit but its not the thing for me.
oh LAWD, do i DARE comment. SO Teens that uses the "INTERWEBS" are more likely to go drink?
this is just about the biggest FAIL sht ive ever heard in my life.
OOOOH nevermind peer pressure, nevermind depression, nevermind Curiosity....but computer usage, yep, that'll do it!
WTF is this world comin too...
this is some fail sht forreal...
U right man, well said....
I'm almost 18 and I have been building and repairing PCs with my dad ever since I was 10. I use my computer every day and have never taken a sip of alcohol. Stupid study...
I would be a raging alcoholic if there was a link between computer use and alcohol consumption but I very rarely drink alcohol at all. So I highly disagree with this study. Correlation doesn't always mean causation so they are probably not looking at all the factors involved.
I'm 17, I'm an avid computer user; I build them, fix them, and game on them. Even after being offered countless times, I have never taken a drop of alcohol in my life.
So there :)
Well I'm 20 and live in the UK.
I could of legally started drinking when I was 18 but didn't like it, I don't smoke either, been gaming since 1996 and been PC gaming since 2007 :)
Not even a strong cup of espresso comes in front of my PC, even though it tastes so good:)
But seriously why would you get drunk during a gaming session and have spent all that money on fast input devices?
I'm not a teen anymore and maybe times have changed but I think those who drink elsewhere might also drink while on a computer but I would not see it as the reason why. And why would you start unless there is something that encourages you to and I can think of no such thing at the moment.
Sure playing while drinking i have a lot of friends (older then me, im 26) who do this not all the time but ye its happen to makes things more happy :P, for me eeee i dont remmember but i will say no.
Weird because I use the computer often and I've never had a drink in my life.
Drunk Geeks???? That sounds like fun...
Well I haven't seen many people drinking while gaming or geeking at their PCs, unless you are cooling your PC with beer...! Hmmm Doesn't sound like a terrible idea...
I guess this is a social thing, I'm a 40 years old nerd but have a lot of teen buddies cause I'm a musician and I used to be a high school techer, I really dont think teens would be encouraged to drink by computer usage, Actually its cool to have something cold to drink at your side, I usually use pepsi, and I have gaing some weight (that should be an interesting poll) My Brother got a wine bottle once, I think it was for xmas, and I drank it all in a couple hours, just by stitting here in my pc, however wine or beer are usually never in my shopping list (its actually never in my wife's shopping list), So, if you are a teenager and your mom allows you to have beer in the fridge, there you have it: Drunk Geeks....!
Now the survey shows that teens drinking are usually engaged to social networks, which nowadays is almost the same that old guys used to call hanging out with friends, So they are replacing real hanging out by virtual hanging out, so now is actually more secure to have ur kids drunk at ur house instead somewhere else. Sober is not a bad idea tho...
Let's see this from a different point of view, the teens who buy beer for gaming would be drinking beer for other activites instead, such as watching TV, hanging out, origami, knitting, who knows...?
Now if there is a survey that tells us that teens had their first drink in front of a PC, thats should be alarming...! I think its up to the parents.....
wow that is soo stupid, i use computers at least 16 hours a day I don't drink I'm at a legal age 19 where I am allowed to but choose not, 50% of my friend who may be classed as geeks also don't drink, the ones that do only do it moderately, and to be honest not to blow my own trumpet but binge drinking happens is what the uneducated youths do, those who party non-stop, engage in drug taking and casual sex do, those types of youths do seem to spend time on computers rather they spend their time sleeping and partying, lol this grinds my gears that the research seem to blame youths like me lol, I would understand if they say something like obesity in teen computer users, but not binge drinking.
well i use the computer 4h a day and i drink alcohol but only like ones every 6 moths because the alcohol here in sweden is to expensive i wold rather get a new hdd insted of getting drunk i have a hard time getting drunk :/ need at least 12 beers (5.5%) and i dont have anny money all goes to my moped and snuff/snus(like cigarettes)so i dont have any $ to spend :/ btw im 16
im almost 16 and a heavy pc user
but ive never drank alcohol because i dont really want to and ive got pepsi anyway :)
I dunno bout you guys, but checkin my G Mail makes me wanna get s***face drunk. ;) lawl
I saw the poll title and said to myself "Hell no." I kinda lol'd when I saw that was an actual vote option.
That's just nonsense.
I am a teenager and I dont drink at all. By the way, Rodney, your poll doesnt display. Checked in Firefox and Chrome.
I spend a majority of my time on the PC. And as a Teen, I didn't drink AND play on the PC. I usually drank only with friends or at some social event, as Rodney said. So, I'd have to say no; I don't think it is, but it's definitely a possibility.
Not trying to preach, live the way you wish to live, I'm not one to tell you otherwise. But try and choose your role models, friends, and habits carefully; They may seem "cool" and "fun", but they are never worth it in the long run. Celebrating on a special occasion is one thing, abusing it is another. :)
i do spend lots of time in front of a computer drinking... BUT 260 is a very small sample size.. and what about comparing it to TV users? although it could be linked to the short videos that most people watch on youtube etc, it means you reach for the drink on breaks more often???
I agree, 264 teenagers is indeed a small sample size and I find it hard to believe.
264 is laughable. Personally I find this article nonsense. Dr Epstein stated on different sites that here work wasn't finished. Medical sites always want a reason to shock people that there children are up to no good.
How would it relate to drinking is my question i sit alot at my cmputer an i think alcolic drinks tastes like s***.
Oh by the way iam 16.
I know a guy who is doing this. But for me it doesn't make any sense.
well im 17 years old and i think i spend a little bit more time behind the pc than other. Yet i do drink more than most of my peers, and the peers who also sit more behind their pc's drink more than avarage. I do think there's a valid relationship in the research.
