well u dont really gain anythin out of it

but its pretty much the same as asking, are movies a waste of time... then people would just think thats a stupid question

but it only works with video games because of the "social engima"

Is a hobby a waste of time?

For the people who argue that you actually learn something in a movie vs a game.

I can't recall a single movie that has taught me more history about war then the multiple war games out there. You go through all the historic battles etc.

yes. That is why I game allot.

It's not a waste of time, it's entertainment. when someone's sees a good movie they don't go: "well that was a waste of time".

A story of a game can be analysed similar to a film/movie, take Call of Duty cutscenes for example. For those critical analysing dudes, this is something to take in

waste

Anonymous

Thats the whole point of gaming! it waste some time!!

Anonymous

yes because even though it is a form of entertainment, playing games won't help you learn anything versus watching tv or movies, you'll actually learn a thing or two while doing so.

What can I learn from Scary Movie? Just because it's on film does not mean you will learn anything.

It's not more a waste of time than any other hobby. No matter what you do in your spare time, no matter how exciting or dull. Some one will think it's a waste of time.

It depends on every view you look at it...
For me , Gaming is in my DNA , if i don't play it , i might die of boredom...
Some might play games just to remove stress and for entertainment , some just think theres much time worthy activity than games . my choice is No!

If it's worth doing , it's worth over-doing it :)

Anonymous

No gaming is not a waste of time, as long as it doesn't consumer your whole day. I also view it as just another form of entertainment, some people watch T.V. i play video games.

Anonymous

Totaly YES!...
...I waste a lot of time !

After working two jobs, the girlfriend, class, and homework, sitting down and playing a few hours of video games with my friends is a GREAT escape!

Gaming is never a waste of time, if it's a good game. Though I don't think it's good if you spend most of your day gaming. Playing games is absolutely awesome, but of course there should be more to life than just games, even though they are awesome.

Gaming is not a waste of time for myself since it is my prime form of entertainment. I honestly don't know how people spend the time and money on simply sitting on their butts in front of the television or in a movie theater. Obviously if someone has other priorities that must be dealt with then gaming could become a waste of time. I agree with you that it also depends on the kinds of games people play. I like to play both MMORPGs and FPSs. Sometimes when I play a FPS I feel as though I haven't accomplished anything. Yet when I play an MMO I get a better sense of accomplishment questing, leveling and earning gear. The ability to make personal connections to people in an MMO is generally more rewarding than just trash talking someone in an FPS.

In a way, its a way to waste time =D

if it weren't for gaming, there would be no multicore prosessors, Multi-GPU-teknologi, and so on..
Thanks to gaming i`ve hade the interest of learning a lot about computers, that certainly will help me in the future, both socially and professionally.

Anonymous

I don't think that PC Gaming is inherently or innately a waste of time. I think it can be when someone ignores other needed tasks, or just spends and inordinate amount of time doing so.

Anonymous

totally NO, because im one of those people who gets paid to play games...before they go o the market..whahahaha

Anonymous

I think that YES, gaming is a waste of time AND money, but I think that as long as you have time, and as long as you can afford it you really don't care, unless you are one of those guys that consider a minute not making money a minute wasted.

Anonymous

if you say playing games is a waste of time
its the same as reading a book is a waste of time
depending on what you reading/playing it varies right?

Anonymous

Gaming a waste of time? No, never! - at least if you are playing a good game.
What useful stuff you want to do else? Reading a book, watching TV? Waste of time! And you can't work all the time. Gaming is for me a way to relax. So yes, I'm doing quasi nothing at that time but hell does it matter if you read a book? And everybody needs some time off. You'll kill yourself if you do nothing else but working.
Moreover, games can be fantastic. Some games (like for me BioShock) have a fantastic story and they really soak you in and you can't stop playing because you enjoy it so much. Other games like FEAR make you feel fear - what does not really happen when I watch a film and never when I read a book.
There is a game for everyone and just saying games are a waste of time is stupid if you've never played one. And if you have a really great time playing a game, how can that time be wasted?

Like the Robotic Organic Droid (^^') I also only play games which I think are worth beeing played. That's also one reason why I don't preorder any games at all.

Anonymous

Well isn't that the point of any 'Past Time' You do it because you have nothing else do... And it's a hell of a lot more productive than watching T.V, so Yes it's a waste of time but it's supposed to be.

Sometimes gaming is like watching a movie. Who says watching movies is a waste of time?
You just have to know when to stop. (tip, don't play minecraft xd)
I play less games then I used to do though, just so I could work a little to make money :)

I wish I could buy computers for 5$

Anonymous

YES. BUT I DONT CARE. GIVE ME MY GAMES.

Anonymous

its kinda ironic how he thinks gaming is a waste of time when his site is calle 3d"GAME"man.com...

Anonymous

Yes it is a waste of time unless your playing with friends.

Anonymous

I went with Maybe. Yes and No - Same as gameman. Could I have put my hundreds of hours towards doing something productive, increasing my knowledge by reading, making money via a side business . . . yes. It's been a great social thing for me - made lots of friends, have lots of fun, it's a lot more interactive than that other 'waste of time' called TV. so yes and no.

Banging my girls is a waste of time but we both enjoy it

Too generic question. I "waste" (spend) minimum 14 Hours per day every day for the past 5 or 6 months gaming instead of So for me it is not wasted. I have the proof of that in plain physics :) - time can not be spent. Point of view. I like how my time passes.

Anonymous

It's a waste of time.
But wasting time isn't necessary a bad thing :).

I put maybe, I guess it all depends on what you COULD be doing instead of gaming.

For example, if i take the hours of gaming i did within the last year alone, divide that by 2 just to be fair, then multiply it by my hourly wage or 1.5 times your rate if you would be getting OT during those hours and it adds up to be alot of money you COULD of been making....

400 gaming hours this year. Hours/2 then rate X 1.5 = $9000 for me

It's Waste of time, but a fun waste of time

Heck no, otherwise, why would we be watching your videos Rodney? Especially under the name - '3DGAMEMAN'.

I'm currently on study leave and have exams around the corner. I find a huge chunk of my day wasted on Starcraft II because I could be spending this time on revising material for my upcoming January exams.

I've been playing games since our first windows 95 computer with a shareware version of Diablo. With Diablo III coming out in 2011 (when I'll be in university) I find that the temptation will overcome me and honestly, I'll probably drop out.

I honestly think if I would of spent all those hours registered on my xfire on study I'd most likely be attending UCL or Imperial college but now due to my low predicted grades I'm forced to to electronic engineering in Brunel.

I regret ever starting gaming because, It has eaten a large part of my day from a young age.

Anonymous

Wow... Brunel. Surely your grades couldn't have been that bad.

It may seem to be a waste of time to other people, but obviously we play because we enjoy it. On the plus side, gaming has proven to be quite useful in the mathematics classroom. Kids really enjoy it when you can use some of the video games they play to explain certain mathematical concepts, like; distributive property, adding like terms, adding positive and negative integers, etc.
And yes I can teach all these concepts using Call of Duty. If you want a kid that games to learn about RATIO, go over his kill to death ratio. Believe me he will pay attention in class. Plus you can print graphs doing print screens.
So the question should be, can we find a productive way to use video games?

it can be productive as well, im always on TS when im gaming.
and i only speak English on there witch it not my native language.
so as im playing games, im also learning english.

apart from my spelling lol, sorry i have dyslexia.

I voted yes, because compared to other things you could be doing (studying, working, etc...) it IS wasted time. However, it acts as a stress release for some and a way to get together with friends and family. I use GT5 (GT3 and GT4 previously) to relax at the end of the day instead of say, drinking. I find an hour or so on Laguna Seca or the Nurburgring extremely relaxing. The Guitar Hero/ Rock Band series are a fantastic way to spend time with friends and liven up a party. But gaming simply for the sake of gaming, i.e without purpose, is wasted time. WOW, need I say more?

Anonymous

What an odd question. Video games are as much a "waste of time" as watching television or listening to music or reading fiction. Anyone who criticizes gaming specifically as a waste of time is likely a hypocrite for similarly "wasting their time" on other forms of entertainment.

People cannot be 100% productive all day, every day. Attempt to be so and you'll eventually run yourself into the ground. Cutting out anything non-productive and sparing no time for entertainment is a recipe for a nervous breakdown. People need to relax, and how they choose to do so is up to them.

In that sense, gaming is just as valid a pastime as anything else he or she might choose to fill their off hours. In my opinion, nothing that brings a person joy is a "waste of time."

Anonymous

it depends .. for me its a stress releaver , but sometimes i get too addicted to a game that i don't notice the time anymore ( in this case its a time waster , but a good time waster ( is there even such a thing ) i try to keep the balance but the GAME side always seems to win :)

Anonymous

If you enjoy spending your time doing something, than its not a waste of time.

Anonymous

Why the hell did it vote "No" when i entered the site!? Well i would have voted that anyway.

Anonymous

No because I play competitively on PC, so it keeps me occupied when I'm not studying. It's also just damn fun.
