I guess if you want to rely on anti-spyware for your protection that's your prerogative. Can't detect something that it's not programmed to look for. Might not find that virus today, but maybe later after the damage is done.
Don't give me that update bios line. You ain't about to update no bios with a code that matches an OEM. It might be possible to get hands on the OEM keys, but firmware and bios I highly doubt most would tamper with. And don't forget they change those codes often. There is not one copy of a pirated Windows that I've seen not have been fowled up sooner or later.
Keep in mind that every time they detect you have pirated software your finger print of hardware ID's are being stored someplace. It's one of those just because everyone else does it does not make it any less a crime.
i usually play pirated games first coz you can't be too sure if it's worth it or not. then if i like the game i buy it. i also buy the game if i think it's a good value for your money with all the dlc and multi-player stuff.
Since I still don't have that much money and most programs and games are overpriced (my opinion) so I pirate some games and some applications. only.
I don't pirate any software whatsoever, as I work for my University and we get access to Windows 7 Enterprise, Adobe CS5 Master Collection, Autocad 2011, etc.
... :D im surprised people are being honest about this
Sometimes, Overpriced video editing software. Also Old dos games and programs that are hard to find like Duke nukem 3d.
I don't know why you would buy software when you can download any software for free...
Some examples -
Windows 7 Ultimate $350 value
Microsoft Office 2010 Pro $700 value
Sony Vagas 9 $600 value
Adobe CS 5 Premium $1900 value
Windows 7 Ultimate $350 value > $291.37
Most people should buy the Windows 7 64-bit Home, OEM or Retail.
Microsoft Office 2010 Pro $700 value > $379.95
Office Word 2010 is $49.99 or the Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Student around $134.
Sony Vagas 9 $600 value > Vegas 10 $74.95
Unless you are a video editor the Pro version is a bit much. The average person would not buy that and instead get the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Suite or around 80$.
Adobe CS 5 Premium $1900 value > Adobe likes to sell their software so high in price. I don't know how they make money honestly. Maybe large corporations pay that much, but people at home and small businesses will just pirate Adobe suites. If you can buy a Student & Teacher Edition or Academic version you can save money.
Adobe really pisses me off. They charge an arm and a leg for their stuff and guess what...
You CANNOT use a discount student edition adobe program to create commercial works, such as building websites for money. Even if you are an art student, you have to pay a few hundred for the student edition and pay some more to upgrade to full version. They just don't care about giving people breaks, so people don't spend anything at all.
I watch anime online, collect music, and certain software. When it comes to the OS, my web development text editor, and and other core apps, I like having the official version.
I'm not going to argue whether it be right or wrong. I pay for most of my stuff, not all, and I have no regrets about it.
Adobe makes their money off of art schools and corporations, the average person isn't stupid enough (and should't be) to a pay for their official stuff. They would make more money if they made owning the product illegally not as attractive as owning it by buying it. In such bad recession, I don't see them getting money from average people.
I pirate operating systems -- sort of. I often end up with up with a lot of messed up retail PCs; most of the time I need to reinstall Windows. Only problem are: The hard drive is damaged, the original owner doesn't have the recovery disks, and I don't have any OEM install disks. So I end up "pirating" OEM copies of Windows so I can reinstall Windows using the legitimate product key found on a sticker on every retail desktop and laptop sold.
I guess I'm pirating, but I got a legitimate reason to.
I pirate things because, well, I can't really pay for anything that's good as I'm too young to get a decent paying job. Oh well, I plan on stopping once I can get a well enough paying job. Also, I think companies like Adobe shouldn't sell their products for so much to normal people and still sell them for as much for companies. What kind of private consumer will drop two grand to buy 3dsmax? Honostly, they should create some sort of at home user license for like $300.
Mostly Music, sometimes an apps, my roommate does movies but I never pirate OSs and games...unless its Postal 2...try finding a hard copy of that game here in my small town
I HATE PIRATES!!!
Someone still has to pay for everything you guys steal!!!
Man! how irresponsible people are
I disagree, it's a copy of the original. so it's not stealing, nor does someone have to pay for it, since most people would not have bought or known about Adobe's mastercollection etc.
Most people using pirated Photoshop will not buy it, they'll downgrade to gimp or any free software instead.
Software Developers can't say they missed $$ income, cause not every pirated copy would have been bought anyways.
So many PIRATES! RRRRR!
I pirate everything!
I chose "I pirate everything"
I hope Agent Rodney Reynolds shows up at my door :D
I use GNU /Linux and free software.
I occasionally will download music if its a top 40 CD for the car otherwise, I always use Spotify.
There's so much hassle involved these days what with Microsoft's Genuine Software campaign.
I found myself installing XP Pro and then having to go to the trouble of getting a legit copy after they started cracking down on the piracy. I.e. service pack 2 key verification engine.
There have also been stories such as the one you posted about ACS Law etc.. its a risky business but partly their just trying scare monger tactics.
I think there should have also been another option: I pirate, but using the neighbours router. But that in itself opens up a whole new topic about wireless security.. all very interesting!
I Pirate everything but OSs, i got virtual DJ Citizen GTA 4 MICROSFT office 2007 and a crap load of music
Anonymous: You are better off in the long run not pirating OS's like Windows. They have so much piracy prevention code on the installs that it reads the other drives to check the key codes and if it finds one that is on the pirate list than it will make all drives you have attached to your system not boot. I have had times when Windows would do this and also format the drive on me eventually causing me to lose data that was very valuable. It is a pretty high price to pay to lose your data this way and the learning curve to figure out what was happening in the first place was a long one since Microsoft doesn't tell you what is going on when they make the drives unbootable. IMO, the hardest thing to pirate is Micro$oft and just almost not worth it. Games have a fairly large learning curve at first, but well worth the savings. Thanks to Rodney for posting this topic!
As far as I am concerned, the internet is a public domaain.
Anything I find there that I can use, I will access and keep.
I do not create torrents or upload any materials that are sold to me as copyright protected, but I will use anything that others have posted.
Well, the poll show some interesting results lol, btw rodney do you pirate? or have you ever pirated something?
I pirate music, movies, necessary but overpriced software and XP because you can't buy a retail copy anymore, everything else like anti virus and the latest retail available os's I buy legit.
I don't pirate. Small software devolopers need money to continue their work. Software like Adobe Photoshop..there are freeones that are equaly good. Music..Spotify is free.
From what I understand GIMP doesn't hold a candle to all the things you can do in Photoshop. They aren't even comparable when you know what you are doing in the two programs, so no, the freebies are not equally good. Adobe stuff is prime candidates to pirate I think!
You are the reason botnets exist.
I can not point out one single thing on my pc which is not pirate. Why should I pay for something i can get for free?
because if everybody thought that way every software company would hit the rocks and you would have no software to pirate to begin with.
Ya, well not everybody thinks like we (computer geeks)do. We have the patience and drive to find out how to work with computer things that most people don't have, and for that, I say we may not have to feel guilty about stealing things from time to time. Now, when it comes to easy things to pirate and have them work, like music and movies, I feel a little bad about doing those, but when I see how many people are standing in front of the red box movie rentals on weekend nights I realize not many people have the knowhow to hurt the artists yet.
In the future, when so many elementary students who have grown up in a world that is a festering boil of knowhow to get things for free and they are always connected, even at school, there may be a sad case for software and entertainment development!
i pretty much pirate anything except from games and some music
i pirating becus im porr
I pirate my friends mother. Good thing they don't know.
...its a trick...they're watching....lol
I pirate allmost everything I own, but only as a test, if I download something and like it, ill go out and buy it, if I dont I wont..
That excludes Music
And my OS isnt pirated..
TV series most new episodes are not availble in sweden :(
maybe i should mention what i DL maybe yall think im a kinda dork.
Hannah montana, sonny with a chance, Jonas, and the suite life on deck. they air on disneychannel.
I litteraly pirate everythiny, i have like 30 games on my PC now i bought only 1 and that is BFBC2 for 15 euro's.
Im sorry Software producers but hey if u can get it free why not right?
Edit: from the games i pirate i only play them 2 hours so why should i spend 40 euro for 2 hours of playing? the only games i play like 5-20 days(gameplay time) are the BF series and CoD series or some other shooters like MoH.
I pirate everything :P
But if the game/video/whatever is good i buy it if is cheap :P
Depends. My thought on the matter is, if you cant afford something but really need it that bad, then fine, ok. If you can find the software that is being shared, is safe and up to date, then its ok.
I think if anyone had the money to spend on software, they would. Lets face it, its just easier. Pirating can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
As for the developers, if people are pirating software, its because they cant afford it, so the developers wouldn't be making money off of them anyways. They are also not loosing money because these are digital copies. Imo it doesn't hurt the market.
It hurts the market in the sense that if you did not have the alternative of piracy, which is the way they want it, then you would be forced to buy the software. So in you being able to pirate it, they're potentially losing at least a sale per person, at most that person's purchase plus the tons of other people that now have access to the original pirater's piracy.
I pirate only three pieces of software. Photoshop, Illustrator, and Sony Vegas Pro.
The reason why I do so is because each of them cost more than my computer themselves. Want to stop pirates Adobe? Stop being so ridiculous at the price point. Sure, charge companies a fair amount as they use it to make bucket loads of money, all I want to do it create my community website, and I have to pay £500 a piece? That's ridiculous, sure I could buy some Corel software but after being taught these two professionally, I really don't have the time to learn the others.
I'll be buying a MacBook Pro soon and I'm going to buy everything for it. I'll buy Final Cut Express, Office, iWork, but I know what software is going to be missing...
I buy most of my games on steam, since it's so convenient , doh I wish money would go straight to the studio and not some middle man.^
Otherwise I only pirate when I have to wait for a product as in a tv show that will in my country air 2 years after it finished in the US.
I can't stand that, I actually tried buying season ticket through itunes and stuff like that but I gotta live in the US for this so.... I "Pirate" certain TV shows yes.
Try b4 Buy i try the game and then maybe Buy it
If I had the money I wouldn't pirate anything. But I really don't have the money to buy every application I use. I also Pirate movies, as I stated if I had the money I wouldn't (except with Viacom's movies, I would always pirate them).
However, I do buy things I really believe deserves the money.
I pirate all my software music and videos, why pay when you can torrent for free im not paying 100pounds for windows 7 ultimate 64bit when I can get it for free I spend my money on hardware
I believe that companies should make their software more afforable.
If piracy forces products high prices down to a point that are affordable then piracy has done it's job and become unnecessary. I've noticed Blockbuster have gone bust (pun intended) but that was because the supermarkets were all selling imported DVDs and CDs really cheap! ($5-10) So it's not always piracy that kills the video store but an evolution to everything being available via the net at high speed and changed importation rules for DVDs and CDs.
The problem with that is that no matter what the price point, most people who pirate will not STOP pirating because it's cheap. It's cheaper when the price is zero, and if they have access to that, they'll continue doing it that way. Of course, they might contribute to the destruction of the company at some point, but most people don't care all that much or aren't that far-sighted. You're right that piracy isn't the single driving force behind busted companies, but it is a problem, ESPECIALLY for very very small companies that can't afford extensive investment in anti-piracy and that can't properly compete with bigger companies anyway. The companies really getting screwed are the tiny ones.
i do pirate a lot but thats more to do with that i dont have the money for all the stuff. useally its to test stuff, and later if it proves to be worth the money i buy it to support the company/industry.
