I don't have a smartphone , but I've used one of my friends a bit and I used pretty much all of my fingers , depending on what I was doing , I think probably because I wasn't decided on what finger to use so I used all my fingers to first decide what finger was the best. But I think I'd go with the ring finger and the thumb as the most used ones :D

pinky or little finger, for unlocking the phone or single strokes, no joke because it's the smallest and cleanest so it keeps the phone clean. For more serious use I still use the index finger.

I have N900, so using thumb would be stupid. And why? Well, Nokia hasn't yet added the vertical UI to the phone.

i dont have a touch screen phone, but when im checking one out i tend to use my index finger

I have a phone with a qwerty keypad with no touch screen (Nokia E63)
I find it is easiest and the fastest to type with both thumbs.
