HyBrid Disk Features SSD and HD

Raidon on Monday unveiled the HyBrid Disk, a storage device that features both a solid-state drive (SSD) and a hard drive in one mechanism.

Designed to replace 3.5-inch hard drive mechanisms, users read and write files to the SSD while the hard drive mirrors the SSD contents at scheduled intervals, creating a back up of the data.

Apple Explains Sexy App Double Standard

Apple's ban on sexy apps -- more than 5000 apps were removed from the app store over the weekend because they contained "overtly sexual content" -- has been making headlines, mostly because of the selectivity of the removal.

While Apple removed such risqué apps as Strip Simon and Video Strip Poker, apps from big-name companies such as Sports Illustrated and Playboy remain in the App Store -- the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit App is even featured on the front page.

Apple attempted to explain its app double-standard in an interview with the New York Times.

After years of legal squabbling between Microsoft and the European Commission, Redmond will soon make it easier for Internet Explorer users in Europe to switch Web browsers. Starting next week, Microsoft will offer a "Web browser choice screen" to Windows users in Europe who have IE as their default browser.

The browser choice screen will arrive via Windows Update.

The Microsoft-Yahoo Deal

Microsoft and Yahoo, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Yes, my fellow witnesses, the moment has arrived; the on-again, off-again courtship that dragged out for approximately 7,432 years has finally reached its climax.

Microsoft Yahoo Search DealMicrosoft and Yahoo announced on Thursday they'd gotten the go-ahead to complete their long-discussed search partnership. Both the U.S.

YouTube to Filter Sex, Violence, Foul Language

YouTube today introduced a new content filter that helps users screen out offensive content, such as news videos with graphic violence, or sexually suggestive clips that don't exceed the service's Community Guidelines. The optional filter, named Safety Mode, also hides all text comments by default.

YouTube to Filter Sex, Violence, Foul Language

Google's YouTube has long banned family-unfriendly content, including pornography and videos that show gratuitous violence, animal abuse, underage drinking, and the like.

Just Being Honest About Battery Life

Last week I wrote about reports that some Windows 7 users are experiencing anomalies with battery life, or at least how Windows 7 reports remaining battery life. The issue seemed worthy of exploring, but not big enough to cause any significant damage to Microsoft's flagship desktop operating system.

The official statement from Microsoft last week was:

"Microsoft has been made aware that some computers running Windows 7 receive a warning that the battery needs to be replaced when the battery is new or in good health.

Intel, Micron Intro 25nm NAND Flash Production

2010 will go down as the year flash storage goes mainstream. Intel-Micron Flash Technologies -- a Lehi, Utah-based joint venture from the two companies that's been sharing technology and flash production since 2005 -- has unveiled its 25 nanometer flash production process. And the impact on consumer products will be immediately noticeable as the flash makes its way to products.

"Verified by Visa" not secure

A widely deployed system intended to reduce on-line payment card fraud is fraught with security problems, according to University of Cambridge researchers.

The system is called 3-D Secure (3DS) but known better under the names Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode. Implemented and paid for by e-commerce vendors, the systems require a person to enter a password or portions of a password to complete an on-line purchase.

As a reward for investing in the systems, merchants are less liable for fraudulent transactions and are stuck with fewer chargebacks.

Samsung Producing 3D TVs

Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday it had started mass production of screens for 3D LED TVs and 3D LCD TVs, a bold move forward in a technology some analysts say is too expensive for most people and could take time to become mainstream.

Samsung is the world's largest maker of flat display screens, and putting new technologies into mass production is the first step in lowering prices. The more a company makes, the less they cost per-unit.

"Recently, 3D displays have captured the industry spotlight.

Microsoft's Game Room: The Arcade, Reborn?

With the Game Room, Microsoft's hoping to capture the old magic of video game arcades, minus the stale air, sugar highs, and wasted quarters.

I got some questions answered on service, which will be available on Windows and Xbox Live this spring. Here are the important details (if you're a retro game nerd):

-30 games will be available at launch, including Centipede, Lunar Lander, and Night Driver (full list here), from arcade systems as well as the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. Microsoft says it'll release 7 new games per week after launch.
