Reverse Engineer A Motherboard BIOS

"Since being let go by Novell last year where he worked on the RadeonHD Linux graphics driver and X.Org support within SuSE Linux, Luc Verhaegen has continued work on his VIA Unichrome DDX driver as well as other X.Org code and he has also become involved with the CoreBoot project that aims to create a free software BIOS for most chipsets and motherboards on the market. Luc has worked on support for flashing the BIOS on ATI graphics cards, native VGA text mode support, and other work to help the CoreBoot project.

Microsoft Patch To Leave IE Hole Open

Microsoft on Thursday said that its monthly security patch, to be issued on Tuesday, February 9th, will include 13 security bulletins.

That's the largest number of security bulletins issued in February for the past four years, according to Sheldon Malm, senior director of security strategy at Rapid7.

Next week's patch is scheduled to include five "critical" bulletins. Two of the bulletins affect Microsoft Office, and eleven affect Microsoft Windows.

Malm notes that all of Microsoft's operating systems, including Vista and Windows 7, will get fixes.

Thumb Drive to Install Windows 7

"Microsoft may be selling Windows 7 exclusively on DVD's, but did you realize that it takes very little effort to create a bootable thumb drive and install from that? We're taking a look at two popular methods of accomplishing this, and as you'll see, it couldn't be easier to install Microsoft's latest OS onto a PC with no DVD-ROM. It's faster, too!"

32Bit OS Shoot-Out

"So here I am a few months later back with what you could call part 2 of this comparison article. This one is truly all 32bit operating systems, yes I spent many hours installing and testing these operating systems to get a better idea of which really is the better choice. I used the exact same hard drive for each operating system to make sure it was truly comparable, fresh installs each time and of course it’s the exact same hardware for each as well.

Intel Clarkdale Linux Graphics Performance

"Last week we delivered our first Linux benchmarks of Intel's Core i3 Clarkdale processor with a variety of computational tests through the Phoronix Test Suite. While the Core i3 packs a nice performance punch, that is not all it has to offer. Also found on the Clarkdale (and mobile Arrandale) processors is an integrated 45nm graphics processor that is supposed to offer a decent level of performance in comparison to earlier Intel IGPs normally found on the motherboard's Chipset.

LG Eve Getting Android 1.6

According to various sources, including LG Canada themselves, the LG Eve will be receiving an upgrade to Android version 1.6. It is only so long before version 1.5(Cupcake) is no longer on any device which really goes to prove how quickly Android is progressing.

Unfortunately this update will not be an OTA(Over-the-air) update, but rather like HTC Dream and Magic customers had to recently do, LG Eve owners will have to acquire the update from the Rogers website. LG has given a rough estimate that it will be released sometime this Spring.

Microsoft Presents Office 2010 RC

Microsoft has made the release candidate (RC) for its Office 2010 productivity suite available to a select few in its tech adoption program, the company confirmed Wednesday.

"Microsoft made a release candidate available to members in the technology adoption program (TAP)," a spokesman said. "This is one of Microsoft's planned milestones in the engineering process; however they do not have plans to make this new code set available broadly."

Office 2010 was made available to the public last November at the company's Professional Developers Conference (PDC).

Windows 7 System Image Disc Recovery

"Very recently Benchmark Reviews published the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade and Installation guide, which helps erase the mistakes made by Windows Vista and introduces computer enthusiasts to the newly introduced O/S. Microsoft has enjoyed a successful launch for their Windows 7 Operating System, also referred to at Win7 or W7, and PCs have been made more productive and secure as a result. But like all good things that we receive, it's in our nature to protect and keep them.

Reminder: Windows 7 RC shutdowns

This is a reminder post for all the Windows 7 users still using the Release Candidate (build 7100) that was released to the public in May 2009. Bi-hourly shutdowns of this build will begin on March 1, 2010, or four weeks from today. This means that the user will be told to install a released version of Windows and their PC will shut down automatically every two hours. On June 1, 2010, if you are still on the Windows 7 RC, your license will expire and the non-genuine experience will be triggered.
