John Fruehe, director of product marketing for server/workstation products at AMD said that the latest twelve-core microprocessors for servers are more popular than eight-core Opteron chips among server customers. Doesn't mean that that's the answer for desktop computers, at some point the number of cores won't be so important (as the frequency is now not so important, but it is :D). And it all depens on the programming of the applications.
