Wednesday Verizon fired over a rather lengthy email announcing that the Motorola DROID X will be available in stores starting July 15. The new phone will cost $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate, and will require Verizon's customary 2-year ball and chain (aka contract). As previously reported, this beast will come packed with a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen (854 x 480), a 1GHz OMAP processor, 24 GB of storage (8 GB internal, 16 GB removable), and 3G Mobile Hotspot capabilities (subscription required).
"Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network," said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network."
This phone definitely sounds hot. One feature Motorola's original DROID lacked was video output--that's resolved with the DROID X, as it provides an HDMI output for DRM-free video content. Other bells and whistles (or in this case, beeps and bloops) include an 8-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, 720p video recording and playback, seven customizable home screens, and tons more goodies. Consumers who just purchased the original DROID are probably hating life right about now.
One other thing Verizon mentioned was streaming BLOCKBUSTER On Demand. Apparently Verizon has integrated this service into V CAST Video. Those who already subscribe to Verizon's video streaming service will be out of luck--apparently the BLOCKBUSTER aspect is only for the DROID X. Yeah, bummer.
"Movies and other video content look tremendous on DROID X, which has the screen, resolution and size to make it like nothing we’ve ever seen before on smartphones," said John Stratton, chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless. "Right out of the box, DROID X customers will be the first to experience the hundreds of movies that will be available through the Blockbuster app."
