If you have been waiting eagerly for the Motorola Droid 2.1 update, look no further, you can install the official release yourself in minutes! I personally (z33k3r) have updated my phone and all is good so far. Just follow these instructions:

  1. Download the official 2.1 update ZIP file from Google: Android 2.1 (ESE81)
  2. Copy the file to your microSD card and name it update.zip (in your card's root directory, not the default download folder)
  3. Turn off your phone. Slide out the physical keyboard. Holding down the “X” buttonm power the phone back on. Let go when you reach the "recovery" screen.
  4. When you see the the triangle with the "!" in it, press volume up and the camera button at the same time to bring up the phone's recovery options.
  5. Use the D-pad to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
  6. Install takes about 2-4mins. When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.
  7. Reboot will take a bit longer than normal, but you should be fully updated. If you do not have backlight on your keyboard (after full boot), you will need to turn the phone off and let it rest for a sec and then boot back up.
  8. Have fun with your live wallpapers, voice to text, 3d photo galleries and more... except Flash (it's not included in this update).
