I had the same problem, but I did not have MachineThrottling in DisabledSessions.

I found a "Fix" for it from MS.

Here is the article and webpage:

http://chris123nt.com/2009/01/18/sqm-client-causing-crashing-in-windows-7/

geez! this is so weird. i've used the Windows Update app around 10 times checking for updates and DL'n and installing the updates w/o incident. so i read this post today and decided to be sure my update app was still working and low n behold, IT WAS CRASHING TOO. lol ..why? IDK i haven't installed apps that would affect it cept for my Atni-Vir app, but i installed that right after i got win7 installed and the update app still worked, now it doesn't. very strange. all i can figure is somehow something independent of my OS environment must have changed?

anyhow, when it kept crashing i got the win7 error report popup from the system tray in the taskbar and clicked on it. here's what it said:

Quote:
To solve this problem, follow these steps:

Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. In the User Account Control window, verify that Program name is Windows Command Processor, and then click Yes.

In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type or paste the following text at the prompt:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

Press Enter to install the solution.

If The operation completed successfully displays, close the Administrator: Command Prompt window to complete this procedure. If "ERROR: Access is denied" displays, repeat this procedure from the top, making sure you clicked Run as administrator in step two.

it fixed the problem and now update app works fine. with no reboot even. figured i'd have to reboot to load the new reg with the modified entry.

anyhow, it looks to be pretty much the same fix you found and linked us to. but mine came from the error popup Win7 help.

Cool, Tivon.

Now that I see you getting the hand on this maybe you can set up a thread for XP and Vista as well.

I've already got this operating system figured out and that's because it's a Vista with tweaks. I tried for a while there to get the old start menu. Turned everything on in the registry and services, but it's just not there period, no longer part of the Aero skin. I'm sure it will not take long before we see some shell hacking to mod in the old start menu.

Hopefully anyone looking for a fix will use Google and find our discussions over Windows 7. I don't want to write too much because it's a beta OS and things might change in the next build.

someone said there's a config in Vista for the classic start menu that you can copy/paste into Win7's directory and the classic menu is supposedly to become an option. i don't know the details and i've not tried it, but the person posting did. i read it in here somewhere, lol.

Perhaps one of their previous updates encouraged that malfunction? :shifty

It makes sense being the two OS's are similar. I figured someone would compare the two and discover the missing data and force it back in Win7. As for me I kind of like the new one now after tweaking it. :Blah

yup, same here. everything got recognized, as in hardware, cept for my Zune PMP. even my logi webcam got recognized and it's MIC too. altho they are of course prerelease drivers and some are MS drivers and not the 3rd party drivers from that AIB Partner.

i've fooled around with a number of critical software options and control of the devices and have, of course, found limitations and one or two bugs. i'm on the verge of trying out the Vista 64bit drivers in Win7 64bit for my hardware n see what changes.

possible, but not probable. reason being is that i did all the updates and i was still able to check for updates after the last update and reboot. now, about three days later, the problem hit's my machine. odd i say. fixed now tho.

How often do you full reboot vs going into a standby after a patch? :)

Could be possible that a common used virus scanner is locking part of the registry. :shifty

Just to note, I can't keep up with this thread so I'm gonna unsubscribe so if anyone's lookin' for me, I'll be in the other Win7 thread.

There is a way to get the windows classic desktop!

In the ease of access themes, it is the center of the top row.

It will give you Windows Classic taskbar, and a semi classic start menu.

Vista does a much better job of doing a "Classic Mode"

I wish Windows 7 did at least as well.

Perhaps if we all send FEEDBACK to them, they will provide a more robust Classic Mode.

It is very good to have as a fallback when the GUI just gets confusing.

i turn my machine off every night before bed and turn it on when i get up. during the day i leave it up to the "Power Options" app. after 10mins the display goes blank and after 3 hours my system is shut down and data is suspended to the Sys Ram in S3 STR mode.

with Win7 and no 3rd party chipset drivers installed for my NV680i SLI mobo, is when i wiggle my mouse to return my computer from S3 power save mode, the fans reset to 100% instead of using my custom fan speed settings in the Bios. i have the newest Bios flashed also. so i end up rebooting the machine at least once a day or more bc of the fan noise out of S3.

i have my new Antec Nine Hundred case now and when i'm done modding it i'll be using the "Tri-Cool" Antec fans with their own hardware fan speed setting and my Fan/CCFL 3 1/2" fan controller. so thats a moot point.

There are many issues in Windows 7, some that do involve drivers.

As TGM states, returning from an S3 state is not really supported, but this could be a driver issue.

I have had issues with ATI drivers, and I am now having an Issue with 1394A (Firewire) Drivers.

Last night I decided to test a few items on the firewire connection on this PC, they al worked fine in VISTA 64, but now there are troubles.

1) Firewire DVD burner will not run at anywhere near full speed, burning 1 full DVD (4.4 GB) took just under 3 hours to complete with verification, most of the time was waitnign for data to transfer from the PC, seems that the Firewire connection was moving at 21 Mb (that's bits, not bytes).

2) Once that FINALLY completed, I decided to add 2 hard drives to the Firewire connection, same problem very low speeds.

3) Disconnected those, and connected my camcorder to try and download some video, to say it would have been quicker to burn a 2 mini dvds on the camcorder then copy them to disk, and burn on a full dvd with an internal burner is not an understatement.

I know this is a beta, I also know that many vendors have not updated or "tweaked" those drivers yet, but for me Firewire is a major functionality, and this needs to be fixed. Something about drivers written in 2006 for an OS compiled in 2008 grates on my nerves a bit.

So you are saying something with the Nvidia chipset/Win7 is not reading the bios to set the speed after resuming from S3.
I also have two 120mm Tri-Cool Antec fans, but they are still plugged into a fan controller. ;)

@tivon - yes, thats what i'm saying, lol. in my Cooler Master Stacker case, which is what i'm currently using, i placed a Delta 120x38mm fan and that spins up to 35Dbs and i also have the side flow fan that mounts to the inside next to the mobo mounts which spins up, lol. oh then the N/B chipset fan has that high pitched ringing. so ya, it's been kind of a pain with that. but when once i decide to install the Vista 64bit 3rd party drivers things like this will hopefully get better.

plus i'll be moving into my new case after i mod it, gotta find someone with a 1" or 1 1/2" hole saw for metal. i've been asking around, but so far no joy. i'll be placing all my fans that aren't the Tri-Cool fans from Antec on my fan controller. =)

Will Windows Update provide us with all of the "fixes" related to the Beta 7000 build?

Or will we need to download patches/fixes individually from the main Windows 7 page?

Thanks

I don't know. I figure it might be awhile before they release another public build. So they must have been happy with what they have so far. At this point they will probably just provide updates.. it's part of the testing. But after a while if they release another build we will probably have to start over gain. At that point I'll stop and wait for the final version. I just wanted to get an idea and some early input on win7. :)

Salutations Everyone-
My name is Jeff and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. You all seem to be having a good conversation here about what is working and what is not working with Windows 7. If you are looking for an additional resource to find solutions to your gaming and driver issues, MS’s TechNet forums have pretty in-depth discussions going on about these same issues. Hey, I'd love it if you guys would allow for a FULL-ON Classic mode like you have in Windows XP. Even Vista lets you set the Start Menu completely back to Classic mode.

It's just an option, nobody has to use it if they do not wish, but I'd really appreciate it if the fully functional classic mode was brought back as an option.

Thanks

UPDATE: If you have a Windows Live ID, you can login and post on their board. I think that would be a great place for us to contribute to. It is great to see Microsoft being so open about this process. It's pretty cool. We have nearly 8 months for working with the build, we can send feedback like crazy from within the Beta install and now we can post in a way that Microsoft reps will be able to read and consider.

Nice...

I understand the need for Classic Menu. For some people it's what we have known for the last 14+ years. And to grab the XP holdouts this is one part of what needs to be done. It doesn't have to be 100% like the old Classic Menu IMHO. It can be a combination of the new and the old.

Howdy Jeff! :cool_shad

Hopefully when I get some free time I'll trek on over, take a look around and see if anything I have here can be added to the on going discussions. :)

I also find it very cool that Microsoft has opened the Beta to the public. :Thumb :Beer :beer:clapping

Have you tried sending the company an email about the problem?

no, i don't like speedfan that much. but i'll be moving into my Atnec Nine Hundred case soon. i finally found someone with a hole saw that i can use to mod the case to hide the cables. i still gotta research the place n cost of powder coating the inside of my case black to match the outside. if it's too much money, screw it, lol.

when i get 3rd party drivers installed on this beta i'll see if the S3 resume screen distortion goes away and see if the fans return to the bios settings. if not, like i was saying the Nine Hundred has 4 tri-cool fans so it won't matter anyways for fan control bc they have the 3 way switch for fan control. the two optional fans i'll be installing i will hook up to my fan controller that also controls my two blue CCFLs. so if the fan speed issue remains, it won't matter for me anymore with the new case. =)

I'm having driver issues with my Nvidia 8600 GTS 512mb card and Windows 7.

The official drivers via the Windows Update built in to Windows 7 would not retain my "DO NOT SCALE" option selection when I chose it. Since I have an LCD and this was my first big time testing a full-on 3D game on the 7000 build, that option is important.

I was able to download a later driver from the Nvidia web site that did seem to fix that problem.

However, that version has problems with VSYNC settings not working properly.

Not too much fun, that's for sure. I hope they get that fixed really soon. It's a pain.
