Determine what CPU socket your motherboard accepts.

the socket types need to match on motherboard and CPU (there are some acceptions with AMD) and make sure your motherboard's maximum cpu power is above the required wattage that the CPU draws.

for example if i needed a motherboard for an AMD Athlon X2 6000 then i would need to find a motherboard with an AM2+ socket and can handle a 140w processor (which will safely and easily power the 125w processor i have picked)
