is the Intel Q9650 still a good processor or should i get a new motherboard and a new i7

If you still have an LGA 775 board and you can find a good deal on it, then yes. A complete upgrade to X58 may not be worth it because you will need to invest in new memory and all that.

X58 boards require triple channel DDR3.

Those are dual channel DDR3 and are not compatible with the motherboard.
