My VCR broke and I don't want to buy a replacement. What is the cheapest way to record these days?

I sleep fine at night knowing we are banning people who deserve it.  Tivon

Get a cheap DVR.
Wayyyyyyyyy better than manually recording.
It automatically records new episodes in series, has an interactive guide, and an internal hard drive that stores tons of content.

The Tivo's require additional monthly charges are there any that don't?

You don't have to get a Tivo. There are other DVR's such as motorola's.
Tivo has some units which don't require monthly but they are all SD units.
Best thing to do is get a series 3 or premier on eBay that has lifetime service included.
