im not sure how exactly it happened , but there was a thunderstorm in my area and even though my pc was hooked up to a surge protector it managed to fry one of my radeon 5770's. well this seems like a good time to upgrade to me, so my question is, what is the best bang for the buck SINGLE graphics card option i have that i can either crossfire / sli later. if there is any more information needed to answer the question better please ask ! thanks in advance.

The 560ti and the 570 has dropped price a little with the new generation that just showed up (can have a 560ti at 199$ and a 570 for 240$) The 660ti is on his way, rummored this week and faster than a 580 (rumor) so you can still wait to see what will be his price, i'll do ;)

On the AMD side the 6950 are at 220$, little bit faster than a reference 560ti (but when overclocked the 560ti is faster) on the newer side the 7850 is at 210$ or the 7870 260-270$ (the 7850 is the equivalent to a 570 and it's the new generation...)

for reference 2 5770 in crossfire is as fast as a single 560ti factory OC

PS: in your case, i think i would buy the 7850 for 210$ now and CF it later or wait a little for the 660ti cause i think this card will be as fast as a 580 or more but for under 300$ at lauch...

thank you for your input. is a single 7850 better than CF 5770?

yeah for sure but not by much as the 560ti vs the 570 is only a 10-15% margin and the 7850 is really comparable to the 570 performance and the 5770 CF is somewhere between a 560ti and a 560ti OC...

I'd say about 10 to 20% faster depending on the games...

if you can afford it, go for the 7870 as this 7870 will OC like a beast and reach the 7950 performance, it have more units on it... the 7850 once overclock to the max 860 stock so maybe 1000-1100mhz will be the same clock as the base 7870 but this one have more shaders, ROPS, etc... so it'll be faster by 5-10% and can still manage to overlclock to a 7950 level...

the 7870 is (at stock speed) between the 570 and the 580 and overclock like beast so it will outperform a 580...

I only suggest the 7850 for the price... this bigger brother worth the 50-60$ more... Also i can suggest to pick a non-reference cooling solution card (more silent, run cooler, better components)
I don't suggest the 7900 series because of the price point/performance ratio as the 7870 is really a big card and 100$ more for a 7950 5-10% faster simply not worth it...

7850 have 1024 shader vs 1280 for the 7870
7850 have 64 texture units vs 80 for the 7870
Both have 32 ROPS and 2048mb of memory

Here you can see Fillrate, FLOPS, etc... You can simulate an overclock on the 7850 and you'll see that it needs: 1250mhz of core to reach the same as the 7870 @ 1000mhz... (the pixel fillrate will be faster but this is only for the resolution and the 7870 32000 Mpixel/sec is already enough to triple monitor 1080P so it won't made any difference... http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=677&card2=678#
