Would SATA 3 hardrives work on a motherboard that only supports SATA 1?

Yes it's backward compatible but you may need to set jumpers on the back of the drive.

Most newer drives will auto configure, assuming the SATA controller properly identifies itself during drive initialization. An early Abit board I had used a controller that didn't, and the drives had to be jumpered.
