Hey everyone. I am currently looking for a good pair of in ear headphones/buds. I had the old Bose IE ones but sold them. I was debating on the Bose IE2 and the Klipsch S4, but I have read good and bad reviews of both, and was curious if anyone had any input or would recommend other brands. Preferably people that have had some oft he different brands to compare to. Looking for a good mids highs and bass. I dont like muddy sounding music and listen to metal and some rap. Thanks.

My personal fav: Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Super-fi-Earphones-Metallic-Black/dp/B0039LREIS

They sort of rap around the ear (Secure Ear Loops) and come with multiply ear size pieces.

The Klipsch's are good too, but if you get any buds that say EB or Extended Base, be sure you have presets or an EQ of sorts because more base doesn't always sound right.

I sleep fine at night knowing we are banning people who deserve it.  Tivon

Those look pretty awesome. I was curious if anyone had tried the Klipsch S4 or Bose IE2 to compare. I was trying to stay below $150 and found that there are 100s of manufactures now. I have heard the Beats by Dr. Dre are too full of bass and nothing else. I like all ranges of sound but with a good bass hit and nothing to crazy bass. I have a pair of Kicker EB141's and they have to much bass and not enough mids and highs.

Never tried the Bose IE2's, but the Klipsch IMAGE S4 are nice and they don't cost a fortune.

I have read reviews saying the Klipsch were lacking bass and some said it was awesome bass. I know when I tried the first Bose in ears the bass was the first thing i noticed. Some also said the Klipsche fell apart easy and felt cheap. I am just trying to decipher if these peoples reviews are from a 12 year old or if they know what they are talking about.

The Klipsch are said to need a burn in time for the bass to become deeper, but you will find mixed reviews. They are in no way as kickass as my Ulitmate Ears though. There are a few other brands to check out. Shure and Ultimate Ears have great bass if that matters. Read what the people on Amazon saying.. you can get lost in their comments for sure..lol

I have read about the burn in times. I use to compete in car audio a while back and I know about the burn in times. We use to hook speakers up and run a frequency through them overnight to break them in. I am shooting on getting some from Best Buy and I think they have a worry free return policy. I just wish I could listen to both before I buy. I do have a Bose store about 10 miles from my work and I think U can try before you buy there so I might see how they sound with the IE2's.

Personally I'd pass on those Klipsh Earbuds and go for Ulitmate Ears, but the price of Ultimate Ear is a bit much for most people. Hmmm.. What kinds do they have a BestBuy?

Alot cheaper online at Amazon.com

Copied and pasted from their site. I was going to go to Best Buy because I had a gift card.I just wanted something well rounded and nothing major $150-up. I know the first pair of Bose I had sound good but I have heard compared to the Klipsche they aren't as good and the Klipsche are more well rounded with good bass response.

If you want bass then there's only one option:

Hippo VB

Here's a review: "Dare I say it? … Ok, here we go: their bass is more or less as refined as the one coming from the $1150 UE11 – but the VB put less weight on midbass and provide more real sub-bass, so they win."
http://anythingbutipod.com/2009/11/crossroads-mylarone-bijou-23-quattro-hippo-vb-hippo-boom-review/

and two user reviews:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57168
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52766

And this is the only shop that sells them, they ship worldwide and shipping is included in the price:

They blow your brains out without getting muddy in the bass, and the bass does not interfere with the mids/highs which stay clear. For metal music you can change out the backplates if you want to cut down on the bass a bit.

The problems I can see is people doing reviews and all the have ever owned is the headphones that came with their IPod. I had Bose IE and Kicker. Nothing else really to compare.

Sorry should of put ear buds. I know headphones is a whole other ball game. I just wanted to buy from somewhere that had a good return policy and I use amazon a lot but didn't want to buy from a user then they tear up and the manufacturer won't cover warranty work due to being an unauthorized seller. I wanted to buy from a place with a hassle free return policy. I seen that ultimate ears didn't carry the 5 pros just the 5 vi.

5vi is a step down from the pro. What do they have at bestbuy that you want? Seems like most people at Bestbuy like the Bose IE2. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Bose%26%23174%3B+-+IE2+Audio+Headphones/1114791.p?id=1218221912874&skuId=1114791
I'm not a fan of Bose however.. can you find a ue super.fi 5 pro anyplace?

Then you obviously didn't even look at the review I linked...

So much for helping someone to some good source of info. If you can't discern a knowledgeable reviewer from some kid who only has stock iPod earbuds, then you should just stay with your Bose's and pretend they are the best.

He is just undecided and I can understand why. Given the fact that a lot of hardware reviewers are made from young adults both amateur and professional, its a total crap shoot regardless of the review links anyone posts in a forum. More or less he just wants your own personal opinion on a good pair of earbuds. I own a pair of Ultimate Ears superfi 5EB and they are above and beyond the best I've ever heard, but they need a player with presets or EQ's because the bass can be a bit much for some rock songs. They are also a little big looking, but sound like a $1000 set of speakers. From what I've been told the UE Pro's are better than my EB's. :)

Then I think it's better to examine review-sites and communities and decide to what extend you want to trust their opinions. Asking for personal opinions here is just as bad as an amateurs' review because you don't know their background.

Still, I was giving my personal opinion about the Hippo VBs and backed it up with some reviews, to "prove" the point that they are really exceptional in the sub-bass region. They are like subwoofers in your head :). And that site with the reviews is a good place to look around, a lot of very knowledgeable people overthere with lots of experiences and comparisons.

And yeah from what I know the UE pro's are really considered to be something special, too bad I can't afford them myself. Although it's mostly the most expensive sets (their pro 18 and Reference Monitors) that get the most praise, and I'd feel reluctant to doing a $400 gamble on their cheapest pro's..

Yeah, $400 on earbuds is totally insane.

By the way, I want to mention that the more I read about Bose products, the more I want to stay away from those. Most people who say they are great have little experience with other brands or have fallen for the hype around them, I'm afraid.

Usually people that have experience with a lot of brands are quite negative towards Bose. Not that they are really bad, but for the same price you can get much better.
This is also a nice read about Bose's products and marketing:

I don't know who has written it so take it for what it's worth, although the guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

I was saying about the reviews is how some people are saying a certain type like the Ultimate Ears for example that Tivon said are the best he's ever heard and he has owned a hundred sets of different high priced ear buds would be credible. Reading reviews on Amazon and Best Buy the people that said they are awesome may not have owned a pair of headphones other then the stock Ipod, Zune or Skull Candy ear buds. It was just weird seeing how one person said they are full of bass and sound great and another review asks "where is the bass" being total polar opposites.

I wasn't bashing your opinion on the Hippo VB I was only stating that from a stock set of ear buds that I had back in the day I have only had Bose IE and a pair of Kicker EB141's as considered "High End", but now that I am getting older I am learning to appreciate that you get what you pay for and I try not to believe in the hype of Bose. Heck when they first came out that was the first pair I have heard that actually had decent bass. I always respect others opinions since I have been doing car audio for going on 13 years now and sadly the big speaker companies for audio makes crappy ear buds :)

Oh ok I can agree with that, I always skip the "reviews" on sites like amazon for the same reason.

Guess that was kind of a misunderstanding then. My own experience isn't great either, I own the VBs, and have heard a lot of cheap stuff so I think I can at least point out which ones are bad when I hear them. I've heard some Sennheizer cans and Philips ones which I quite liked, but I'm not sure if you can compare that with IEMs.

Anyway I hope you can find some info on Anythingbutipod.com, for example these Panasonic IEMs are looking really good for the price:
http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56274
This review isn't on the frontpage but it's written by the admin who also made this comparison spreadsheet of 49 IEMs:
http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15243
It's all subjective but it's getting so big that it's a nice overview. All made by the same person so as a comparison it should be quite accurate.

Just got back from Best Buy and picked up my Zune HD and picked up a pair of the Klipsch S4's since they said they have a 30 day no questions asked on them. Right off the bat I had the stock ear tips on and I was like "where is the bass"????? Until I changed the tips to the biggest size and got a good seal and it came out. I bet most people have problems with the seal. After that they dont sound to bad. Just a hassle to have to fool with it to get to seal up. Might be taking these back.
