you can probably get a phenom II x4 955 BE and a 790XT motherboard. the 790XT is aging a little but still holds a solid 5 star rating and is really cheap.

phenom ~ $160

790XT ~ $90

thats about $250 for just mobo and processor.

RAM on average will cost around $100 for 2-4GB

so far about $350

since this is going to be a really budgeted build you might stick with onboard audio because a good sound card can cost from $50-100 more.

Western Digital Caviar Black ~ $70 average for a 500GB

$420 so far.

an optical drive you can pick up at your local computer store for pretty cheap, usually from $30-50. in this case i will use $40 for example

which brings us to $460

ATI Radeon HD 5770 is about $170

which brings us to $630

a case of your liking can be around $150 which all totals out to be around $780

the rest is shipping

Awsome thanks guys. If i went with the amd build and changed the video card from 5770 to a gtx 260 would the cpu be a bottle neck? and would i see good improvements? or is it only worth it on the i5 build?

you may not see any real big improvements with the 260 over the 5770 and it is next to impossible for a phenom 955 to bottleneck even a 5870 or 5970, you should have zero problems with a 5770 or a 260

Go with the 5770; lower power consumption and support for DX11.. The only advantage you'd get with the GTX260 is PhysX but since not all games are using it your best choice would be the 5770.

Don't have time to say everything but you guys are overestimating a lot of prices. Do not use anything but newegg-it almost always has best or close to best prices.

460 not 260=a lot better than 5770 and DX11

but hes looking for a cheaper card to suit his $800 buget, so in this case a 5770 would be a better choice because it is almost $60 cheaper.

if he were to get a 460 he would be over his budget and have to cut in other areas

Like not spending $150 on a case would be a good spot for that
