Can different cards from the same series work in crossfire mode?

They have to be the same model. The brand can be different though.

For example:

You can't crossfire a 5850 with a 5870.

You can crossfire an XFX 5870 with a Sapphire 5870.

wrong! you can CF the HD5850 with the HD5870 cuz they are from the same sries, but the HD5870 would acctually underclock itself and work at the same speeds and specs as the HD5850.
and as Vortex88 said, its also possible CFing diffrent brands.

Are you sure? From what I've heard, you can only crossfire the exact same gpu's.

Neta is right-same "series" can crossfire-i.e 5870,5850,5830
Cards will clock down to lowest common denominator. Keep in mind that the performance scaling is better with 2 same gpu's

So basically you can do it, but you'd still want two of the same GPU's, so that you get the full performance out of the cards. Otherwise, it would just be a waste of money.

yup, waste of money, unless you get one free and you have nothing to do with it its no good!
