To forum members:

Has anyone read the Harvard Business Essentials: Business Communication book? I'm thinking of getting one in Nook format because this morning when I read an e-mail for doing a work experience, I wanted to make sure I'm very clear in this. I was trying to find a way how I can communicate and not offend a business owner and my mom pointed out that even though the statement "let me get this clear" may sound kind to me, I could offend anyone that I am communicating with and my mom helped me out by saying "this is my schedule for this week" and I have my schedule in a list to make things clearer for me and the business owner. I really thought that "let me get this clear" is less wordy, but like I said, I did not realize I could offend who I am communicating with.

So I thought I might buy this book after I read the sample version of it using a Nook for PC application, but I can't be very sure. If anyone who is reading this can take the time to download a sample version of the book (you have to download a Nook application if you don't have a Nook), do you think book will teach me how to avoid mistakes like the one in the first paragraph? There are other books for the Nook but I'm too cheap to spend $50 in any of the books for me to read, so I thought I might come here to get some help.

Here's a bad example of what I've written before my mom helped me out with how I communicate:

Quote:Hi, good morning. Let me get this clear:

  • Breakfast and Lunch Prep
    • Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
  • Little Lunch and Vending
    • Thursday: 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Sure, that would be great. Thank you.

And here is a good example before I send an e-mail to confirm my schedule:

Quote:Hi, good morning. Thanks for responding to me. This is my schedule for this week. Let me know if there will be any changes.

  • Breakfast and Lunch Prep
    • Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
  • Little Lunch and Vending
    • Thursday: 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Sure, that would be great. Thank you.

I'm going to be entering a business world and having such a basic work experience is part of that as my first step before I enter the Florida Business Enterprise Program in Daytona, which is geared for the people who are visually impaired. I'll be doing breakfast and lunch preparations tomorrow and will be working with vending machines Thursday so I can get a general idea of what it's like before I enter the program and get a license as a business owner supervising either breakfast/lunch preparations, getting snacks and drinks stocked up in vending machines, or both. Plus, accounting and record keeping is very important, so I already have the computer skills to do the job (including working with Excel 2007 since I'm a heavy user of Outlook). But right now, I'm taking it one step at a time and the training program is four months, so I'll be taking it seriously from there.

Anyway, for anyone who reads my thread, thank you for taking your time to read my thread and I'll look forward to read your response.

PS: Pardon me if I writing a thread as if I'm writing a letter. Business writing and communication skills are very important to me.

PPS: Hmm... I'm not sure if the quotes are working right. It reads like "Quote:Hi, good morning..."

Update: I've added a link to "idea" in case anyone is curious about the difference between "idea" and "ideal."

Business communication skills need to be taught in high school to prepare people for the real world.

Not at Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine back during 2002, sadly. I took Business Communication at Tallahassee community College back around Spring 2008 and mine's just getting kind of rusty.

I'm curious about your assumption since you did not cite any sources: all (100%) high schools have to teach business communication to students. Am I completely correct in that?
