All the above and more. We had a custom skin and lots of mod hacks. Every update was a real pain. All that spam was nuts. Hacked a few times. And there was a few bugs in the database that would crash the system. We are much more stable now than before. All of this that you see here will change and get better. For now most of the traffic is on the front-end. We didn't want to open the forums in unfinished state, but time was ticking down, perhaps a bit too much.
So when are we expecting another major update for the site?
Between next week and the end of the year we should be ready to step away from this beta. I don't want to spoil the major update, but it's hot and worth sticking around for.
next week and the end of the year? Yikes!
I'm thinking this forums need to be reduced until the traffic picks up.
reduced? what do you mean by that
Combine the sections to post in.
Combine the sections to post in.
I don't want every single forum garbled into one. If that happens I will stop posting at all.
Say goodbye to one more dedicated user.
Why the heck does everyone have a heart attack with every little change around here?
I'm only talking about a few sections that don't get posts. Maybe merge just a few of those into one of the other sections. Like those 3 member review sections at the bottom we could move into one section and maybe remove the Member Questions sections since Rodney has that one on the RR site and those questions are only general hardware and not Rodney question. That's what I'm talking about here.. you okay with those changes or should I call 911? lol
These forums need some pruning to help make it grow. I'm now going to check some of the old threads that failed to work with the crossover and lay them down to rest.
That is fine but do not merge general hardware with general software...that would be death
Those sections are running fine, no need to change those at all. But you do see what I trying to do right? We had this problem before with too many dead sub sections like with less than 100 posts for a whole year. They just fail to earn their right to have a section for themselves is all.
In truth you could have both sites using one forum. Something to think about at least. It's all up to Rodney and Zach.
Ya with the amount of traffic this forum is getting it would be good to merge the two and merge SIMILAR topics together.
The captcha for even member posting is very, very annoying.
I was asked to put a captcha code for a comment I made on the *new* pictures thread. I wasn't impressed.
If you are logged in you should not see captcha. Try ctrl + shift + r and refresh the screen.
When the forum used VB or per say last forum. I thought it was simpler to use and loaded faster. This new forum takes longer to load at times and yes it has more flavor but are
we done with it or still experimenting while its live?
BTW, I also notice the this forum is NOT as active as it used to be. Seriously.
I found something odd in "Your 3GM KICKASS! Pics" thread. Posts in pages 10, 11, and 12 went missing. I might be wondering to see what's going on and why the thread's closed (just for curiousity).
Also, I'd like the ability to stay logged in whenever I come back to the website just like I can in the VBulletin forum.
I can't fix it, so I've locked it and made a new thread. I'm always logged in when I come back.. that's odd.
a search bar that lets you search the entire forum would be great.
There actually is a search box... but we will be making that more apparent with the new revision out very very soon!
So now that I'm back, I have to say this is very, very wonky and not user friendly as it once used to be. I'm glad you guys moved away from the graphical layout used on the Wizards of the Coast forums. Too much white over there and it starts to hurt my eyes.
In the interest of improving the quality of these forums, I'll give you my experience:
I largely access this site from work, as a way to turn off parts of my brain for short amounts of time. I'm forced to use a largely locked down version of IE6 because I work for the DoD. This was never an issue in the old forums, but here, the page links don't line up right and any thread longer than 5 pages has those tabs covered by the "Post a New Comment" window (if there is a Last or Next button, I can't see either one). If you'd like, I can take some screen caps of what I'm dealing with and try to find an unblocked hosting site.
No direct link to the user CP is just not good. I had to hunt half way into this thread to find the link to fix my sig and tweak some of my settings.
Threads scroll very "blocky," meaning they don't scroll smoothly for me. I scroll the wheel or move the slider and the forum basically hops up and down short distances. I suspect it has to do with having to "redraw" the header for each post as I scroll. Again, this wasn't an issue before.
I have yet to access the forum from home due to just a lack of time (our daughter will be 2 in January and we'll have a second girl showing up on or around New Year's Eve; and oh yeah, don't forget the dog!). I'll see if this responds any better to my myriad of unencumbered browsers and post an update to this thread.
I'd love to see the "wide" version since I'm not too keen on the side ads or the feeling of browsing a Letterbox version of a forum.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you went to such a "blingy" forum software? Something like what the guys at OCForums are using seems like it would work much better and make everyone happier. I gotta admit, all this blingy forum code is bordering on Geocities level of annoying. I want info, not colored bars.
The current layout is a little wonky because some settings have been changed in advance to make the new layout work properly. What you see now will change completely to a very nice dark theme very very soon.
On those locked down systems. I download the Firefox Portable.
Now to get flash working takes a little extracting and pasting.
by right clicking and selecting “Save Link As”
After this open the file using either WinRar/WinZip and extract the
lashplayer.xpt, NPSWF32.dll files to Mozilla Firefox\plugins\
You can also change the extension of the .XPI to .ZIP if that helps.
Some people have different plugin locations.
This is a DoD system. I'm locked from installing any programs or apps, period. I can't even update my own virus definitions (they're pushed regularly anyway, but just using an example for clarification). I did try setting up FF Portable but even "use system proxy settings" doesn't work. It was worth a try though.
Basically I'm stuck with IE6. And, no, we're not allowed to use USB keys at all. Or any wireless peripherals. It's 1984!!!
Glad to hear themes and such are changing and I want to give you guys props for the work you're doing on the back end. I hope you took my post as constructive criticism as that's how I meant it.
I guess we should ask Zach to provide a basic compatible option for IE6. But I personally know he would rather stab IE6 in the neck rather than to support it. Sounds like they have your computers locked down hardcore style. My recommendation is to destroy that computer so that they make a new one with an upgraded operating system.
Haha! Believe me if I could I would. I think I'll be alright. There are workarounds if I just poke through in IE6. I understand I'm definitely in the minority. Hell, we finally just got XP about 3 years ago.
So far, no IE6 "support"... but I'll try my best to keep you in mind. Just know that it's not going to be on my priority list... ;)
Loving the new layout! Way to go!
LOVE the new layout. So much better than the last one, and my favorite two colors!
Have you tried just running the .exe file off of a thumb drive? I do this on the computers at my high school because I hate I-explorer. The computers at school are completely locked down but you can still run the .exe file from a thumb drive and get any program to run on the system. Since its on the thumb drive, there is no need to install it on the computer's harddrive.
Wow, what a progress. Keep going!
